Why We Grin When We Break Down

Our life of travel causes concern and worry for some when we are stuck on the side of the road waiting for a tow, but for Bruce and me, it has become a beautiful opportunity to express gratitude for the blessings that come EACH.AND.EVERY time. Instead of sinking into despair whenever Ramsey signals there’s something wrong, we grin at each other and say, “Wonder what miracle is headed our way.”

That is why, after our travel plans to head to Missouri this spring were squashed (after a two year absence from seeing our kids and grandkids), although disappointed, we were filled with expectations and gratitude, knowing everything would be okay.

Tow #1 from our campsite in Quartzsite, AZ

It all began when we fueled up in preparation to begin the trip. Unfortunately, there was gas accidentally mixed in with the diesel and Ramsey soon let us know something was wrong. The first tow took us in for repairs where the fuel was drained, lines flushed and a new fuel filter installed.

Ramsey ran beautifully as we made our way to the first stop to visit family just 2 ½ hours away. When we left to continue on, the truck sailed north towards Flagstaff and we kept remarking how amazing it was running. And then …

Ramsey had no power. We glided to the shoulder of I-17, barely off the highway, snuggled up against a guardrail. We had driven only 80 miles. No time was lost in calling roadside assistance, but it took 3 ½ hours to finally be towed off that horribly busy highway where every passing vehicle rocked us side to side. It was a long wait, but it also was Divine Intervention … a necessary time for us to talk, to consider what’s our next step, what’s the best thing to do; i.e., should we continue to Missouri or head to Oregon where Ramsey’s doctor will heal him?

Tow #2 – Rescued from the hazardous I-17

Those 3 ½ hours were a sacred time as we opened our hearts and let go, trusting that God and a host of angels would guide us. We agreed that it was imperative to head to Oregon to get Ramsey back in tip-top shape. We’d go to Missouri later.

The tow truck driver went above and beyond what was allowed or required to find a place to park us. Every stop at a repair shop was a bust. They either couldn’t work on the truck for days or weeks, or they wouldn’t allow us to sleep in our camper at their shop. This is the first time we’ve ever been told no about staying with our camper. He drove from shop to shop for 1 ½ hours, even took us to a RV park as a last hope, but there were no sites available. Finally, he decided the only place to take us was to his friend’s shop, which he had kept mentioning as a possibility, but hesitated because he couldn’t get in touch with the guy to make sure it was okay with him to drop us there.

We spent the next four days there, awaiting the replacement of the fuel lift pump. We couldn’t have been in a better place (Thank you, God!) for we had access to showers, a kitchen, and a fridge and freezer full of food – all graciously offered. (See why we say we are always provided for?)

Finally, the part was installed and we were back on the road. Ramsey sailed along so beautifully. We made it to Kingman, AZ, then to Barstow, CA, and then to Madera, CA where we stayed with friends for a few days.

Onward we sailed towards Oregon, until Ramsey wouldn’t start again after stopping for gas, just 30 miles from our next destination – a campground in the Mendocino National Forest.

For the third time in two weeks, we called for a tow. You might think that by now, worries were more prevalent than expectations of blessings and miracles. Not so for us. We’ve been through this so many times, have experienced such amazing miracles, that we sit back and wait for them to happen!

Third tow in two weeks! Thank you Roadside Assistance!

Once again, we could not stay in our camper at the shop while waiting for repairs. The little town of Orland, CA has only one hotel – just a few blocks away from the shop – an easy walk if you’re not lugging all the stuff you need for a few days at a hotel. There was no Uber, Lyft or taxi service in this town. Another huge blessing came when one of the mechanics offered to drive us to the motel. We were so grateful, we tipped him $10. (Remember this tip!) It appeared that we would be at this motel for maybe the rest of the week. Gulp! Rooms were $122/night! Still, we trusted everything would be alright.Settling in a hotel room is weird for us – we rarely do it. We missed our home, our bed. And oh, did we ever miss our coffee maker. The room did not provide one! YIKES! I had come prepared with coffee and filters. Fortunately, we were within walking distance of some stores where we found a cheap coffeemaker. All is good now!

The next day, the mechanic who had taken us to the motel called to let us know he worked on the truck and it was running just fine. (That $10 tip worked like magic!) I immediately hurried to the front desk to cancel our 2nd night and hopefully get a refund. At first, she hesitated since it was an hour past check out time, but then she relented. (Thank you, God!) And once again, someone from the shop came to pick us up at the hotel.

We took off, heading to a campground where we planned to stay several days as we watched the weather in Lakeview, waiting for sunny days with temps above freezing so the roads would be clear. And then, the day came for our last leg of the trip – 230 miles to Lakeview on the up and down mountain roads. I talked to Ramsey the whole trip, encouraging him, telling him how many miles were left to get to Ray. One last stop for fuel and we had just an hour’s drive left. Ramsey was a beast … it was as if nothing would hold him back. He climbed those mountain roads with ease. Bruce had to slow him down when he reached 75 mph.

We made it! And this is why we bring Ramsey to Ray every summer …

Ray, the truck whisperer

The first thing Ray said when we pulled in was, “I heard you coming. Ramsey isn’t well.” You see, Ray hears things that no other mechanic does. He KNOWS this truck; he LOVES this truck. He climbed into the driver’s seat, placed his forehead against the steering wheel, closed his eyes and listened to Ramsey – placing his hands on the dash. He could hear what was working just fine and what was not. He knows what Ramsey needs him to do. They talk to each other!

So, here we are now, awaiting Ramsey’s repairs. Our loosely held plans (for we’ve learned to be very flexible and open about plans) are to head to Missouri in July. Our ninth grandchild is due August 2!

We drove 1400 miles, had three tows, three repairs, RV parks and motel expenses and through it all, felt immensely blessed and safe. It’s been astonishing to see what a difference it makes to accept whatever comes our way. Instead of being overwrought with worry, we are filled with the expectation of miracles and blessings. This change of mindset has made all the difference in our life. We not only experience the peace and calm when we break down on the road, but also with everything and anything that comes before us.

So many times, I hear (and have said it myself), “I wish life would be smooth sailing instead of these bumps and boulders.” Here’s the deal. You know what an EKG looks like – the ups and downs of your heartbeat? It’s the same for our lives. There are peaks and valleys. They signify life. Smooth sailing would be like the flatline of an EKG – which signifies death. Yeah, I’ll take whatever comes with grace, with trust, with expectations of miracles.

A favorite quote of mine came from the movie “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” It has become engrained in my being. I say it often:

“Everything will be alright in the end,

and if it’s not alright –

it’s not the end.”

And so it is with us. Stay tuned! July is coming!

“Not All Who Wander Are Lost” – the Naked Hippies Latest Adventure

“Not all who wander are lost” is the quote by J. R. R. Tolkien that I wrote on the back of our camper.

It’s been there from the first day we set out on our dream come true, living and traveling and exploring in our truck camper.

There has been lots of wandering for the past several years, thousands of miles traveled, and we have  been lost when Siri confuses me, but only lost temporarily until redirection takes place and we are guided to our destination.

Funny to me to consider this quote in terms of what we do to fund our travel lifestyle, to realize it so perfectly fits what has changed over the last couple of years.  I’m sure it would appear that we have been lost because we just disappeared.

Those who have been following our travels for the past six years know that we were pretty much always sharing various ways to make money online, for that has been our “ticket” to living the life of our dreams. And the programs we offered through all these years were fun and valuable …

but, we burned out big time.

It got old … every single time the same thing happened – excitement exploded at first, high hopes shared, expectations were fueled by testimonies of success. And then, the energy fizzled like air being let out of a balloon – pffffffttttt.

Excitement dwindled as so very few were making any money … going, going, gone. Another one bites the dust – again and again and again.

So, we withdrew for quite a while to take a deep breath, check in with ourselves, and figure out what’s next, knowing that we have endless possibilities. Holding on to the assurance that no matter what,  we always have been and always will be just fine – even though we’d lost the drive and motivation to go back to the same ‘ol, same ‘ol.

That’s when e-commerce became a beacon of light to us. It was still online marketing, would still allow us to use the skills we had acquired over the years, and best of all … no more recruiting, no more “selling” the hope while we held our fingers crossed behind our backs.

That’s when we started creating mugs at Gear Bubble, set up a shop on Etsy, Amazon and E-Bay, thinking we were pretty damn saavy to get this all going … and we waited for the $$$ to pour in.

Guess what happened?

Piddly sales, a mug here and there, once in a while.

Out of the plethora of mugs we listed on Etsy, we had any very few sales, nothing to jump up and down about as we sold about 3 YEARLY.  On Amazon, we couldn’t make the monthly fees, and on E-Bay we couldn’t make the required delivery times.

Pfffffftttttt.

That’s not gonna buy much gas for our truck.

Sigh.

rope sandals

Then, we partnered up with our hippie friends at Eastwind Community to sell rope sandals.

(Have you read my blog post about our first visit to this commune two years ago?)  We spent last winter selling these sandals at our booth in Quartzsite, Arizona and on Etsy.

And while we’ve got a pretty good thing going with the rope sandals, we are limited because of the constraints of production by those who make the sandals at Eastwind. It’s not a huge operation, the sandals are handmade one by one, and expansion to sales of even just 20 pairs a day would not be possible.

We’ve been wandering. Not lost, but waiting for the redirection, the guidance to get us back on the right “road.”

It happened this past week,  coming to us as things always do – out of the blue, at the right time, and at the right price.

GearBubble got our attention with its offer for a 30 Day Challenge which promises to help anyone get started with E-Commerce.  And … it’s free!  At least for now it’s free, but this course will be costly when it’s officially released after this 30 Day Challenge (probably will be a $2k course.)

We’ve been part of GearBubble for several years now as I mentioned before, and impressed with the level of training its owner Donald Wilson provides. He’s sharp, he’s generous and he’s had tremendous success with e-commerce product launches he has done with his partner/girlfriend/amazing marketer Rachel Rofe.

When we got the email announcing this latest course for free, it didn’t take long for us to agree that we would jump in.

We want what Donald and Rachel have

We’re ready and willing to listen and learn what we can do at this crossroads in our business.

I don’t know if you have any interest in launching an e-commerce business.

Or  maybe you already have one going and it’s not doing what you hoped it would.

I’m just sharing this to let you know what has come up for Bruce and me, knowing that we aren’t alone in the burnout and dismal results we’ve experienced.

So, to those who are feeling a bit of a nudge right now, a prickling of that old familiar feeling of “this could really work for me” … I invite you to take just a few minutes to listen to Donald Wilson talk about this 30 day challenge and see if the nudge gets stronger.  (I believe it will!)

And to those who have not one iota of interest in e-commerce or doing something to add extra income to your monthly budget, I ask that you hold a space for Bruce and me … a space of love, encouragement and support, wisdom and clarity. (I believe you will!)

Meanwhile, the open road still calls us to come, see, explore and enjoy.

the naked hippies bruce and trisha

We’re still wandering,  still making the most of every opportunity to see and experience all the beauty of Nature,

still spending time with family and friends as we travel, still making new connections, new friends.

And still very much loving all that we do, who we are, and how life’s adventures continue to teach and bless us.

Love and light to you,

Trisha

P.S.  The Challenge kicks off today, August 12. This is my kick in your ass to go NOW and sign up – we’ll be doing this together for the next 30 days … wandering through the maze of e-commerce with expert guidance so we don’t get lost. See you there!

Paradise Found at East Wind Community

Sign leading us to East Wind CommunityWe found paradise at East Wind Community, a hippie community in the Ozarks! Who knew? We surely didn’t expect it to be so perfect and peaceful and profusely rewarding.

It has taken me several attempts and edits to write about it because the three week experience was far above and beyond our expectations and imagination. It’s like trying to explain how falling in love or holding your newborn for the first time feels; or trying to find the perfect words to describe why sunsets and mountains and forests make me cry. It was THAT amazing!

Bruce and I stumbled upon the East Wind Community when we bought a jar of almond butter and noticed it was made in Missouri, in the little town listed as one of the fifty best hippie towns in the US.  We were curious and eager to find out more.

It was no accident, us finding East Wind – it was the Universe planting seeds in the fertile soil of our adventurous minds.  Soon, the familiar conversation which always begins when a new opportunity comes before us started.  “Have you ever?”  “Nope!”  “Do you wanna?”  “OH Yes!”

We did our research – reading everything on the East Wind Community website and our eagerness grew as we poured over all the information, read the history, learned about membership and viewed the pictures. But, just as I’ve said so often about the spectacular places we’ve been able to visit … nothing comes close to actually being there.  Images of the Redwoods will make you gasp at their beauty, but standing among those giants will make you fall to your knees. And so it was to immerse in living and working and communing with this remarkable group of contented and happy people. We felt their heartbeat of freedom, of peace, of oneness and it impacted us deeply.

east wind community ducks
Such fun to observe and be with these graceful and fun creatures!

I felt the presence of peace as we began to meet the members. It was noticeable and tangible to me; and maybe it was because I was an outsider who wasn’t in the throes of daily living/working in the community, but that strong sense of peace in itself told me that this three week experience would be more than just a summer camp type of adventure.

And it truly was, even though I had some wondrously fun experiences feeding the ducks, the calves and even forming a bowl on a pottery wheel!

I was and am still astonished and in awe at how well this egalitarian lifestyle works. It’s definitely an escape from the money stresses and struggles that permeate the “outside” world. However, it’s not for everyone; this lifestyle does require sacrifices of one kind of freedom to gain a different, even greater freedom – just as our roadtrip lifestyle does.  Membership application and approval takes time so that everyone, both members and applicants, can see how well the “fit” is.

east wind community gardens
Nature expresses bountifully and beautifully here

People come to live at East Wind for many reasons. I loved hearing why and how and when they made this their home. One young man expressed how secure and peaceful he feels now that he left society’s hectic pace and scramble to make money.

Another woman shared that she left her law career to come here in order to avoid the stress and exhausting work load she witnessed destroying the lives and dreams of so many of her mentors. Some members have been here for decades; some for a few months. and there is a healthy balance of young and old.

Here at East Wind, all the basics like shelter, food, and even clothing from the community closet are provided. But the treasured jewel of this community living, I believe, is how this lifestyle helps each member develop an intrinsic purpose of contribution for the good of the whole community. It is like a well-oiled machine with many moving parts.

Everyone works here, that’s a requirement. It’s necessary, but it is so off-the-charts better than any “job” I’ve ever had in the 8-5 world. Why? Because you get to do what you love and if you change your mind and want to do something else, you can – even if you don’t have the skills or experience. There are so many different jobs available that boredom and burnout are not issues. You have the opportunity and are allowed to switch jobs.  You pretty much set your own hours, take breaks when you choose as long as you fulfill the required number of hours each week.  Most of all, you feel immensely satisfied that your work is valued, no matter what you do.  It ALL fits together to benefit everyone.

east wind community herb garden
Such a pleasant cubicle to work every day!

During our three week visit, we were completely satisfied and happy weeding the herb garden and helping out with washing dishes.  In return, we were fed the most nutritious meals we’ve ever had prepared by members whose “job” that day was cooking for 60 people.

When we left, we told everyone that we wouldn’t eat this well until we returned for another visit.  Every meal was a banquet of scrumptious healthy dishes of garden vegetables and while we were there, we feasted on the meat from a freshly butchered hog! We enjoyed fresh milk, cream, yogurt, kefir and cheeses. We had access to an abundance of herbal teas and tinctures, formulated and prepared using the herbs from the garden. Freshly baked bread was almost a daily treat. Such abundance, such love and care for all the food and animals and people abounds here.

This amazing design uses no hardware for support

Throughout the community there were places to gather and relax with others. Our favorite spot was in the herb garden, under the newly built yurt. It was constructed with cedar logs cut from the community’s forest and it supported a massive and intricate growth of wisteria, providing shade and shelter to all who gathered. And all who gathered ‘round the table there, who shared stories and conversations with us, we loved. Our hearts are woven together now – always with us no matter how great the distance that separates us, and always tugging to pull us back to East Wind.

east wind community yurt
This was our favorite gathering place

Our perception of community living was  greatly expanded, enriched and reshaped during our visit so much so that we are open to making East Wind our home; but not yet.  We still have more wandering to do.  But, the members at East Wind have shown us a better way, a different way, a more fulfilling way to live.  The value of contributing and serving to the benefit of everyone, the equality of worth among all members, and the quality of life provided from the sustenance of the land are what will bring us back to East Wind as regular visitors until our nomadic lifestyle is done.

Dancing With Life – The Naked Hippies Way

Dancing with life sounds like a beautiful way to live. It’s great if you can flit and float on life’s “dance floor” with ease and grace, but life doesn’t always waltz along smoothly.

The #1 question we are being asked these days is, “Where to next?”

It’s been a month of traveling a circuit through Missouri to see our kids and grandkids and friends, not much different, I imagine, than a band going from town to town to perform; although “perform” for us was more time of connecting and catching up, but still, required being “ON” and immersed in constant activity and conversation.

where to next for the naked hippiesNow that this annual trek is coming to completion, we are wondering where to next? The loosely held plan is to return to Quartzsite in October for the winter months, so that means we have five months to go anywhere we choose. But, we still haven’t decided, still are in the talking stage of “wouldn’t this be fun, or this, or this.”

This decision so beautifully parallels a much deeper decision we have been contemplating, researching, learning about and immersed in for the past several months … a personal decision about where am I going next.

And while the road trip decision is one that we anticipate with eagerness and excitement because this is what we know, what we do …

the personal decisions about  life and who I am and what do I want to do is not such clear cut, easy one to make.

Some may scratch their heads at this revelation I just shared because the perspective is that Bruce and I ARE living our dream. Most people express their desires to do what we are doing … so what else is there for the Naked Hippies to do?

It’s the same ol’ thing that perplexes and calls each of us to be more and do more in life, a constant seeking to find what’s next after you are doing what you’ve always wanted to do. For there is no end to this life until one takes that last breath, and there are so many possibilities available, so many different directions to choose from that will stretch you to expand and enrich life, no matter your age.

We have been with young people and old who are struggling to find the “gem” of purpose in life. There is a heavy sense of unfulfilled dreams and desires, a longing to “someday” be and do more, but it is waiting on a back shelf until the time is right. And all excuses given sound reasonable and validate the reasons to wait, but oh, how my soul fidgets when I hear these explanations.

For this is what I know and have experienced – life is too short to wait until everything is lined up perfectly, until all the perceived needs are met so that the path you choose will be as easy and delightful and rewarding. We didn’t wait, we took leaps of faith. Our story of these leaps is shared in my book “RV LIVING The Naked Hippies Way: Live Your Dreams, Don’t Wait for “Someday.”

You see, when you dare to start thinking about a change to make in your life, your ego which holds a PhD in architecture and engineering, pulls out the “set in stone” blueprint and begins to argue against making any changes. Your ego says, “It’s not logical, it’s not safe, you’ve never done this before, you might fail, it could be disastrous. Everything is in place, according to this blueprint … why would you want to make any changes to something that is so familiar and comfortable?  You are C R A Z Y!”

But your soul, that pure part within you that pulses with your heartbeat and that knows you intimately, continually hums a melody that every once in a while you hear and recognize. It causes you to begin to dance to with a grace and freedom that feels so right, so perfect, so joyful.

Dancing with life to the music of your soul is bliss.

And you dance for a while, moving and swaying in the flow of your soul’s song, feeling free, feeling empowered, feeling like you have found Nirvana … until the ego cuts in and begins reminding you of all the dangers of the unknown.  It’s like you were dancing to the music of a beautiful waltz, twirling and gliding so gracefully, when all of a sudden, the ego changes the song to “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and you are whisked into a frenzied jig of upheaval and anxiety.

What I’ve noticed as we meet up with old friends and make new ones along the way is that when we dance the “waltz” among so many who are dancing the “jig,” their soul recognizes the peace and joy and flow of our waltz and they join us in the dance for brief moments, but soon they return to the jig that they have mastered and do so well.

Bruce and I do that as well. We’re not always dancing to our soul’s song. Not always dancing like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Our egos also storm out on the dance floor and interrupt the flow, demanding the jig.

It’s not the physical “where to” that has us dancing the jig … it’s the inner “where to next.” It is exhausting and overwhelming and disempowering when you allow the ego to control the dance.

This past winter, we danced like we were eighteen again! It was something we had never done in our ten years together. Even in this experience, our ego wanted to control by suggesting we’d embarrass ourselves. Instead, we did it anyway and had the most fantastic times on the dance floor.

But, what was so noticeable and insightful was how the music determined our participation. When 70’s rock and roll was played, we danced non-stop. When the music changed to another genre such as hip-hop, we sat down. When we knew the music, our feet glided and stomped, our bodies wiggled and swayed because the songs that we remembered from decades ago were brought to full expression through us.

Your soul’s song, the one that is as familiar to you as 70’s rock and roll was to us, is always playing, but most of the time, your ego has cranked up the volume to drown it out.

The quest is hear the song that reverberates within as often as you can. When you do, instead of hearing all the reasons why you can’t, you shouldn’t, you are not enough … your being is soothed and inspired and held in a space of peace that passes all understanding.

I encourage you to find a way to turn up the volume on your soul’s song. Find a way to be exit the noise and dissonance of the ego and begin dancing with life.  And do it often, do it routinely so that it becomes part of your day as habitually as brushing your teeth every morning.

That’s what Bruce and I are doing right now … dancing with life. We’re exiting the ego’s jig as much as possible, using meditation and contemplation to return to the waltz where the soul sings the lyrics “anything is possible, all is available, you have more to be and do with the years that are left.”

Stay tuned. Soon we’ll be heading in a new direction physically as well as purpose-full. Just need a few more rounds on the dance floor!

Trisha

Enjoy this … it never ceases to amaze me!

The Naked Hippies in Quartzsite

In two days, the wheels will start turning once again as we begin our trek back to Missouri to visit family and friends after spending 40 days and 40 nights in the desert in Quartzsite.

Well, not really 40 days and 40 nights. We’ve been here for 151 days, a total of five months camping off the grid on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land where hundreds of thousands gather every winter to escape the cold and snow.

We came here not knowing all the how’s and when’s and where’s of setting up camp in the middle of a desert … new territory with new experiences. All that we knew for sure was that our $180 long-term camping pass bought us a camping spot from October 15 to April 15 and access to trash dumpsters, water and a dump station.

RVs everwhere in Quartzsite!

The total acreage of the BLM land in Quartzsite is over 11,000 acres. There are four different camping areas available and during the height of the winter season, all are filled with the assorted extreme of campers — from tents to vans to pickup campers to the fancy schmantzy class A’s.

The population of this tiny little town explodes during the winter season from 879 to estimates of hundreds of thousands!

We arrived before the onslaught and by the time we prepared to leave in April, it was fast becoming a ghost town again.

Big Foot nestles in Quartzsite desert

We picked a spot, further back across a few washes with a beautiful saguaro out our back door, surrounded by mountains, where the sunrises and sunsets dazzled and awed.

Once we settled in, we never sought a different spot – it was perfect. Lots of wide open space all around us, a few neighbors now and then, but no one ever parked close enough to make us feel like our space was being invaded.

So began a new experience of living in the desert – and even after five months, we are still taken aback by the majestic beauty, the peace and serenity and finding it difficult to leave. But, then, a few recent days with temps in the 90s tells us we definitely don’t want to be here during the heat of the summer.

Now, I at first thought this blog post would tell you how we lived here and made it work without full hook-ups. Nah … that’s not why I am compelled to write about camping in Quartzsite. There’s plenty of others who give you the tips and tricks for doing this sort of camping. Same as my book that isn’t a “how to” live a fulltime RVing life, but a WHY to live your dream.

No, it was all the new experiences we had here, far removed from the hustle and bustle of society (at least until we had to make trips to replenish supplies). Life slowed down, time expanded and we found ourselves living with the rhythm of nature.

Quartzsite rocks create a beautiful peace sign

I was immediately drawn to the rocks that grace the land here. I couldn’t resist their pull to be noticed, appreciated, held and yes gathered in my pockets or bag to take home.

The gleaming white quartz that I collected became a giant peace sign that marked our camping spot. And then, the other rocks of a vast assortment of colors began to cry out to me … greens, blues, turquoise, rose, orange, purple … so vivid and beautiful as I walked the desert washes.

Spectacular sunrises every morning in Quartzsite

How perfect this setting was for us … out in nature, removed from traffic and frenzy, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, a blanket of stars at night, full rainbows, coyote serenades … so perfect.

And then, there were the people we met here who became like a family so that even though we were far removed from society, we found a circle of friends who reached out, invited, shared and helped with what they had, what they knew.

If we wanted to be around people, the huge tent that served as a community center provided plenty of opportunities to connect and engage and have fun. There was a calendar filled with activities – from yoga, exercise, dances, karaoke, creative crafts, Vegas nights, movie nights and a daily happy hour that brought us out of solitude to meet and get to know the other campers.

When Thanksgiving and Christmas came, we gathered for potluck dinners that more than satisfied our taste buds and soothed and comforted our separation from families back home.

We were blessed by these new friends who came to our rescue when repairs were needed, when we needed groceries or firewood. Friends who said, “Come, let’s go to Mexico!”  Friends who made Bruce’s birthday special by sitting around our campfire. Friends who gave, served, loved life, loved freedom, just like us.

The blessing of this circle of friends was unexpected and a saving grace that filled these five months with fun and laughter, adventure and new experiences … like dancing the night away.

Dancing! It was something that Bruce and I had never done aside from a slow dance under the stars sometimes … but never in public among other people. With the almost weekly dances, we couldn’t, wouldn’t, didn’t want to exclude ourselves from the fun, so we went to our first dance. Loved it.  Went to the next and the next and the next.

We were dancing fools! Crank up the 70s rock n’ roll and we never left the dance floor!  It was like being back in high school as the familiar tunes reached our memories. We found our rhythm – we danced like no one was watching – huge smiles never left our faces.

So, while we were having a blast here, loving everyone and everything that we were experiencing, the “other” side of our life continued to evolve and expand and keep us with one foot in the “real” world while the other foot secluded and separated us from it.

Life interrupted harshly. My brother-in-law died, followed by the death of our dear friend in Eureka Springs. Life also blessed and enriched us. A granddaughter came into this world. Bitcoin rose to new heights and our investments in cryptocurrencies provided the means to make major repairs on our truck. I began a weekly call that allows me a platform to develop my teaching and speaking skills.

And, after all the fun and excitement of the activities and friendships made, we retreated to immerse in what matters most of all – returning to the one path that we never leave, no matter where the road takes us – going within.

It’s like a calling, a whisper, a nudge, a reminder that no matter where we are, what we do, who we are with … there is a greater power within that provides more fun, more connection, more peace and more love, beauty and joy than all that we see surrounding us in this physical world.

We were moved and drawn to this return by the experience of the drum circles we attended week after week. A new rhythm was found there as we sat around the campfire joining in to keep the beat of Mother Earth strong. A familiar rhythm that rose up and grew within and without.

For the last couple of months here in Quartzsite, we remembered, renewed and restored the rhythm of us, Bruce and Trisha, the Naked Hippies. Some of the inner work we did was painful, but it opened for us a deeper connection, both to each other and to God.

Our daily routine changed from seeking stimulation and support from outside of ourselves to finding the true Source of it all. At times, we made ourselves go into town just to come down from the lofty heights that we were experiencing.

It has been phenomenal. Our camper became our sanctuary. We immersed in teachings that broke open new understanding of why we are here, what really matters, how we react and respond, what we really believe.

It has prepared us for the road ahead. Not just the travels we will enjoy this summer, but also for all that life will drop in for us to experience – all of it, from the highest highs to the lowest lows.

And most of all, this time and energy we have spent as strengthened our faith, trust and belief that we are loved, supported, protected and provided for fully, abundantly, unconditionally, exceedingly by the One who is called God, The Universe, Source, Spirit, Quanta. The One who said, “Ask and it will be given. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened.”

In a couple of days, we will head to Missouri to be reunited with our kids, grandkids and friends. We will most likely look the same to them (a little more tan, of course) but we are not the same as we were the last time we were together. We have grown spiritually to a new level that will only be evident and expressed by our words and actions.

We came to the desert to escape the cold of winter and to rest and be renewed. Oh, how our time has been blessed beyond what we first imagined when we planned for our winter in Quartzsite.

Blessings have poured forth to us over and over in all the ways I’ve shared in this blog post, and in ways that words cannot convey.

We leave here with the peace, love, assurance and delight
that come as we open ourselves to be an expression of God
living in us, through us, as us.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Free Camping – How The Naked Hippies Do It

Free Camping! We love it and this is how and where the Naked Hippies do it!

We’ve been to 19 states this year, traveling nearly 11,000 miles and not once did we pay for a campground! My last blog post told the “inside” story of why were were able to do this.

We have received so many questions about the nuts and bolts of how we actually do this.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding=”27px|0px|0px|0px” _builder_version=”3.0.80″][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.80″ text_font_size=”16px” inline_fonts=”Francois One”]

For those who want to know HOW we manage free camping so easily, this is for you.

This is our way, The Naked Hippies Way for free camping. Take whatever ideas you think you can use – but remember, this is all part of being willing to be uncomfortable to live your dream. Our Big Foot pickup camper provides us shelter, a comfortable bed, a fridge and a stove. The kind of free camping we do is for those who want to get off the grid and do it as cheaply as possible.

WHERE DO WE FIND FREE CAMPING?

We have slept on the mountaintop in Colorado, in the woods in Minnesota and yes … in WalMart and Flying J truck stop parking lots. It’s all a matter of location and convenience. Since WalMarts are everywhere, they are always the sure backup when a site out in nature is not so readily available.

These are the resources I use to find free camping:

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding=”27px|0px|2px|0px” _builder_version=”3.0.80″][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.80″ text_font_size=”16px”]

1. BUSINESS LOCATIONS:

First, get the AllStays App:  This is a lifesaver for us. It’s not free, but it has paid for itself over and over again. I think I use this app more than any other on my phone.

This app gives you a multitude of selections from free and paid camping sites, casinos, state parks, national parks, public lands, RV stores, rest stops and truck stops.

TIP:  When putting in a location, always type in city and state (not abbreviated)

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_image src=”https://nakedhippiesroadtrip.us/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Free-camping-AllStays-App.jpg” _builder_version=”3.0.80″ use_border_color=”on” border_color=”#0c71c3″][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding=”1px|0px|0px|0px” _builder_version=”3.0.80″][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.80″ text_font_size=”16px”]

When we camp at WalMart, we always call to make sure it’s okay to park overnight. It just makes sense to make sure before settling down for the night. You definitely don’t want to be awakened by security telling you to move. Most WalMarts do allow overnight camping; but in some towns and cities, a local ordinance overrides the WalMart nationwide policy, so always ask.

We also usually do a little grocery shopping in the WalMart – a way of “paying” for the privilege of camping there for free. And, we never “set up camp” in the parking lot. We don’t pull out the camp chairs and announce in any way that we are camping. (seen it many times and wondered who really thinks watching WalMart activity is relaxing?!)

Casinos are also a great place to park for the night. The AllStays app will give you the location and a review from those who have camped there before. Again, it always is a good idea to get permission.

Flying J is our number one truck stop for overnight camping. There is always a good number of RVs parked at Flying J along with the diesel trucks. We have become so accustomed to the rumbling noises of the diesels that it’s like white noise to us now as we sleep. There’s also usually a Denny’s available. Or if not, Flying J does a decent job with their convenience food.

One more perk for staying at Flying J is that most of them have RV dump stations and propane tank filling available. We signed up for a Flying J rewards card and can dump for a discounted price of $3.00 – instead of the $10 fee.

2. CAMPING FOR FREE IN NATURE:

We use two websites to find free camping at national parks and on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land:

Campendium and FreeCampsites.

These are great resources that have helped me find amazing, beautiful and free camp sites as we travel. I start by putting in the state and then zoom in to see what is available close to our destination. Most of the free campsites have a 14 day stay limit.

TIP:  Always look for the camp sites that have reviews to help you find the best spot – or to avoid the ones that aren’t so favorable. Read the reviews to find out how scenic the site it, how the roads to access the site are, and what kind of reception your wireless carrier has there. I love the reviews that include pictures as well.

Once I find a location that sounds perfect for us, I have the directions sent to my phone. Easy-breezy!

3. AIRPORT CAMPING!

Now this is one that is definitely outside the box when it comes to camping. We learned this easy and valuable way of visiting cities when we attended an event in Utah a few years ago. Then, we had reservations at the event hotel but our pickup camper wouldn’t fit in their parking garage, so we parked at the airport, used the shuttle and slept in the hotel for 3 nights.

LIGHTBULB MOMENT! Why are we paying $199 a night when we could go back to our camper every evening and pay only $10 a night for parking?

Since then, we have parked and camped at LAX in Los Angeles, at O’Hare in Chicago and at the San Diego airport. We hop on the shuttles and city transit systems to get wherever we want to go. The bonus – we sleep in our own bed every night and pay a minimal fee for Economy parking and transit services. Plus, we don’t have to drive our camper in horrendous city traffic.

Camping at the LAX economy lot is a thrill for us! We watch the huge jets come in right over our heads. The rumble is amazing, the constant stream of jets is astonishing. How can we sleep with all that noise? We just do. We’re safe as security patrols the area regularly. We’re comfortable because we’re sleeping in our own bed. It’s an incredible hack for free camping!

WHAT ABOUT SHOWERING?

First, you need to know that we converted the shower in our camper to storage. If your RV has a shower, you won’t have to be concerned about this.

You’re going to love our solution. It’s brilliant! We are hippies, but not so much dirty hippies, thanks to this amazing fix to our non-existent shower!

Here’s what we did. We got a membership at Planet Fitness. The “Black Card” membership which I pay $19.95 a month for allows me to take a guest (Bruce) to any Planet Fitness facility in the country. With over 1400 clubs, it’s easy to find a location on our road trip travels using their app. Plus, they are open 24/7!

We’ve had this membership for nearly a year now and have yet to work out! We just shower there. Maybe one day, we’ll actually work out – ha ha!  Flying J has showers available, but only if you are a commercial truck drive, so this solution at Planet Fitness has been perfect for us.

With that said, in between the Planet Fitness stops, we are quite comfortable with sponge baths and baby wipes!

WHERE DO WE DUMP OUR SH*T?

As explained earlier, we usually find a Flying J for this necessary but yucky job. The discount we get there makes it worthwhile to bypass Love’s where the fee is anywhere from $10-$15.

We also found that in Iowa and South Dakota, the rest stops provide FREE dump stations! That was such a great service we wish every state would offer RVers.

Now for the grim reality. Sometimes, we are miles or days away from a dump station and the tank starts getting dangerously full.  I have to thank my Grandma Day for guiding me to use coffee cans or jugs for the excess. (she always kept a pee can in the car.)  I started using a “pee can” when we lived in a tent for one summer and were not close to the campground bathroom. Ever since we hit the road in 2013, I’ve kept them handy.

Yep! Lived in a tent in 2009! Want to read the full story of how our dream began when we got rid of everything and moved into a tent? Get my book “RV LIVING: The Naked Hippies Way.

HOW DO WE GET MAIL?

This is only applicable to full time RVers. We don’t really need an every day delivery of all that usual junk mail. We pay bills online and have online banking services. But, occasionally, we do need to receive mail.

For that, we have a mail service from Escapees which forwards our mail to whatever address we give them. When we know we’re going to be at a friend’s or family member’s home for a visit, we call to have them send our mail there.

HOW DO WE GET BY WITHOUT PLUGGING INTO ELECTRICITY?

Until we figured out how to do this in order to charge our laptops and phones, we had to pay for campgrounds. Many RVers have generators for this purpose. Our pickup camper has no extra room for even the smallest generator. We had to figure out something else that would work, and we did.

We have an inverter that is now wired to our truck battery. Our truck has become our generator. We are able to charge our devices as we travel and also when we are parked. Sometimes we run the truck, sometimes we just run the inverter off the battery. This has been the last piece of the puzzle to fall into place so that we can truly camp for free.

Without electricity, our coffee maker sits idle but we have an antique drip-o-lator that makes awesome coffee using the gas stove in our camper.

WHAT ABOUT FLAT TIRES AND BREAKDOWNS?

We’ve had 3 blowouts on this trip, plus we had to be towed over the mountains in Arizona when our truck lost power and couldn’t make the steep climbs. We’ve been rescued many times by Good Sam’s Roadside Assistance. Of all the expenses we have, this one is vital to our peace of mind.

You can imagine how difficult (as well as humorous) it would be for Bruce and me to tackle changing a tire on the pickup when the camper is weighing it down. Not gonna happen. Good Sam’s Roadside Assistance has always provided quick and efficient service, sometimes above and beyond the limits of their rules and regulations.

There you have it – The Naked Hippies Way for free camping.

It ain’t always pretty and definitely not always comfortable, but we’re free. We’re traveling this gorgeous country now, not waiting for everything to be pristine and top of the line.

We also have the immense blessing of visiting friends and family as we travel. Their hospitality showers us with the luxury of showers, laundry, electricity and meals. But, as the open road continually calls us, we stay to enjoy the conversations and luxury, but eventually, the itch to get moving has to be scratched.

Our next free camping adventure is taking us to Quartzsite, Arizona where thousands of RVers gather for the winter on hundreds and hundreds of acres on BLM land. We will pay for a long-term pass which gives us camping from September to April for $180. With that pass, we’ll have access to a dump station, water and trash disposal.

You might have your own hacks for camping for free! We’d love to hear them. Leave a comment below and we’ll let you know if we try it.
