Camping For FREE – We Proved It Can Be Done

Camping for free was our goal when we set out on the open road in April.

We have traveled nearly 11,000 miles through 19 states in our Big Foot pickup camper – and we have not paid for one night of camping!

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.0.47″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” _i=”1″ _address=”0.1″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.78″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_image src=”https://nakedhippiesroadtrip.us/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/2017-Roadtrip-Map.Blue_.jpg” _builder_version=”3.0.78″][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding=”27px|0px|5px|0px” _builder_version=”3.0.78″][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.78″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.78″ text_font_size=”16px”]

It was a challenge we set for ourselves to see if we were truly set up to be self-sufficient. That was the necessary obstacle to overcome to begin camping for free.

We proved we can do it! In a few days, we are heading to Quartzsite, Arizona where we won’t have electricity to charge our laptops and phones. We’ll have to drive a mile or two every week to dump our black tank, toss our trash in a dumpster and refill our water containers. Our journey this year proved we can absolutely do this boondocking thing in Quartzsite.

We’ve been on the Naked Hippies never-ending roadtrip pretty much continuously since 2013. We’re living our dream. How are we able to do this? It’s definitely not because we had a huge savings account or lucked out with an inheritance from a rich relative. No, there’s two reasons:

1. We didn’t wait until we had everything perfect.

If we had waited until we could afford a spiffy RV and had a nest egg of savings to pay for gas and camping and all the other expenses of the road, we would still be sitting still in Missouri (and shoveling snow in the winter!)

Instead, we were open to opportunities and blessings that came our way; and mosttof all, just took a huge flippin’ leap of faith believing that everything would be okay, that we would be safe, and that the Universe would provide what we needed. That’s exactly what happened, and it still is happening.

2. We are comfortable being uncomfortable

This is really why most people aren’t living their dreams. Most people desire to do something different than they are now, to be free to live life on their own terms … but not if it requires being uncomfortable.

It’s an old Dodge Ram pickup with an even older camper on it. Things wear out. Stuff quits working. We either find a work-around solution or fix it. Most of the time we choose the work-around because sinking a lot of money into something that will have no resell value seems pointless.

So we are comfortable using duct tape and bungee cords to hold things in place; comfortable using coffee cans when the black tank is full and we’re nowhere near a dump station; comfortable making coffee with an antique drip-o-lator on the gas stove because the electric coffee maker requires too many amps to use the inverter; and comfortable with sponge baths instead of daily showers.

The mother of all “get-out-of-your-comfort-zone” is to on occasions be comfortable sleeping at WalMart and truck stops where diesels rumble all night and the lights on the parking lot make it so bright we can almost read a book at night. It’s definitely camping for free and sometimes, all we need a place to sleep for one night before heading on to the more picturesque free campsites we find

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.78″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.0.78″][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.78″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_image src=”https://nakedhippiesroadtrip.us/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/10369209_10204036656857405_4647732434285209277_n.jpg” _builder_version=”3.0.78″][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.78″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding=”27px|0px|0px|0px” _builder_version=”3.0.78″][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.78″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.78″ text_font_size=”16px”]

Comfortable, too, when one by one, our tires blew out; when our truck lost power and we had to be towed over the mountains in Arizona; when every mechanic we talked to had a different idea about the truck issue; and when a passing car honked to let us know our wonky back door had flown open again.

Good grief! I’m getting a bit grumpy writing about all that uncomfortableness … but then, I remember.

I remember sinking my feet in the sand at Santa Monica beach, gasping in awe at the bluebonnets and Hamilton Pool in Texas; seeing the magnificent and grand Badlands, viewing the battlefield at Little Big Horn, driving through the Black Hills and standing under the Presidents at Mount Rushmore …

stepping in the headwaters of the Missouri River in Montana, the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Minnesota and Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron; crossing the five mile Mackinac Bridge; spectacular mountaintop camping in Colorado; touching the border of Canada; tasting pasties for the first time; the mountains, the canyons, the forests, the wide open spaces …

and I say to myself, “It’s worth it all!”

Most of all, I remember all the friends and family we were able to visit. We had a joyous family wedding in Missouri that brought so many family members I hadn’t seen in years; we met in person for the first time many of our dear Facebook friends; we reunited with friends whom we always make sure we stop to see when passing through; and I had days instead of just a couple of hours of uninterrupted, loving and deep conversations with my sisters for the first time in my life.

It’s the friends and family who offer a parking space and an extension cord who have made our journey of 11,000 miles easier. Who have excitedly welcomed us saying, “Come … stay … shower … do laundry!” Who load us up with movies and books, garden produce, boudin, roasted green chilis edible cookie dough and garden produce. Who provide a free massage, a home-cooked meal of fresh crappie or stew, a boat ride and a campfire.

Could we have done all these miles without their gracious hospitality? Of course, but we’ve learned to never turn down these kind of invitations, these gifts. The time we spend on the deck, around the kitchen table, at a restaurant, or in the backyard or living rooms of our friends and family is a treasure that we cherish.

Everything ahead is unknown. We’ve never camped at Quartzsite with the massive number of RVers who come there every year. We know a little of what to expect, but not a lot. But this we do know for sure – whatever comes up, whatever uncomfortable issues we have – we’ll figure it out and have an amazing experience. That’s The Naked Hippies Way!

Quit Your Job and Travel

Quit your job and travel? Really?

Most people think the odds are against them when they hear “quit your job and travel.”

But it’s the #1 response people give when asked “what would you love to do more than anything?”  No. 1 is travel and the No. 2 response is quit my job.

The #1 reason they give for NOT doing either is money.

You’re about to meet some people who will inspire you and show you that it doesn’t take a lot of money to travel.

And, you’re going to learn that there are countless ways to travel cheaply and even make travel your business.

Meet the dreamers and doers:

First off, meet Nomadic Matt who will prove to you it’s possible to travel without a lot of money.

It all started with Matt’s desire to travel.

QUIT YOUR JOB AND TRAVEL … life’s too short to wait.

packing_lightIt was the title of Allison Vesterfelt’s first book that grabbed my attention and interest …

“Packing Light: Thoughts on Living Life with Less Baggage.”

Allison dreamed of being a writer and finally made the leap by quitting her full time job, selling nearly everything she owned and taking off on a year long journey across the country in her Subaru Outback.

Her story of the journey and struggle to get her book published will inspire you, because of the insights she gained as she moved past obstacles.  She now is an author of two additional books “The Chase”, and “ Writing to Find Yourself: Becoming More Authentic Through the Art of Writing”  and is helping aspiring writers become published authors.

Subscribe to her list to receive her inspiring messages of creating your own awesome life.

It all started with a year long roadtrip for Allison.

It all starts with the dream to quit your job and travel.

Nadine Pisani had a dream to quit her job and move to Costa Rica.  In her book “Happier Than a Billionaire: Quitting My Job, Moving to Costa Rica, and Living the Zero Hour Work Week” she share’s how she and her husband risked it all for the dream of living the life they desired.

Happier_than_a_Billionaire

Her wit and humor will have you laughing as she shares how they found reliable utilities are not that reliable, quirky neighbors are unavoidable, and tackling red tape takes the strength of a linebacker

She has since written two additional books to help you even more if your dream is to move to Costa Rica.  “Happier Than a Billionaire: The Sequel”  is their story of moving to the beach to build their dream home and discovering that not all dreams come in the form of brick and mortar. Some appear after taking a chance when all odds are against you.

The third book “Happier Than A Billionaire: The Escape Manual” is your how-to manual, your guide for moving to, living in or traveling through Costa Rica.

Check out her blog.

It all started with a Nadine’s desire to quit her job and live in a tropical paradise.

Quit your job and travel … on the cheap!

We learned about Vanabode by Jason Odom long before we were living in our pickup camper.  Is it any wonder that his message intrigued us when we were still dreaming of living on a never-ending roadtrip:

I will show every single person how to get out of their current situation and on to the road trip of a lifetime by using the strategies and equipment my wife and I have used for 21+ years.

If you want to be successful and have fun every single day of your life let me spoon-feed you our solid, proven, well-explained plan. I cover everything you need to have a great life on $20 a day; including delicious food, lodging, transportation, a hot bath, a good night’s sleep in your own clean bed, and days and nights filled with great fun, romance, and new experiences.

Wikipedia’s definition of a “disruptive technology” or “disruptive innovation” describes Vanabode precisely; innovations that improve a product or service in ways that the market does not expect, typically by being lower priced or making something for everyone that was previously only available to the rich.

vanabode

We immediately bought the book “Vanabode happily camp, travel and live forever on $20 a day.”

This book is as wondrous as the Sears Catalog used to be for my grandparents!  We devoured it, began to see how traveling was possible without having a huge bank account first.   And there are times we still consider a white Chevy van. (Get the book to find out why.)

For Jason, it started with a dream to live and travel cheaply.

Miracles happened to us … it can happen to you, too, when you quit your job and travel.

Finally, meet the Naked Hippies!  That’s us!  Since November 2013 we have been traveling the open road on a never-ending roadtrip.  It’s our dream come true.

Naked Hippies Roadtrip One Year Mark

Did we have a huge savings when we started out?  No.
Did we have a top of the line RV when we left Missouri?  No.
Did we have an online business that we could do from anywhere we parked our camper. YES!

We had the dream, the desire and the belief that everything would be provided as needed. And it has been.

12071894_10208713955626951_1220778536_nI just published my first book, written to tell our story… you can read how we got rid of everything and lived in a tent one summer … how our pickup camper literally dropped in our laps… of our adventures and fun as our dream became real and we hit the road.

And most of all, just like the others mentioned above, you’ll be inspired to go for your dream … NOW!  Pick up your copy of “RV LIVING The Naked Hippies Way: Live YOUR Dreams, Don’t Wait for “Someday”

I know you’re thinking … are they really naked?  You’ll have to read the book!

For the Naked Hippies, it started with a dream to live, travel and work on the never-ending roadtrip.

Every single person featured in this blog post started with a dream.  A dream to travel, a dream to quit their  job, a dream to write, to inspire, to show others how it can be done.

Yes, you can quit your job and travel.
If you could take off and go anywhere right now, where would you go?
See you on the road!

Living in a Van to Travel Further, Easier and Cheaper

Living in a van? Are you out of your mind?

We've done the RV travel; now it's time to Vanabode!I bet you are having flashbacks of Chris Farley on Saturday Night Live talking about living in a van down by the river – right?

Before you conclude that living in a van is a ludicrous, wacky and absolutely crazy way to live and travel … hear me out. It’s a fun way to travel further, much easier and lots cheaper. And, it is a way to begin living to travel NOW!

Ask anyone what they would do if time and money were no object and 95% would answer, “TRAVEL!”

And yet, most people have a distorted perspective of what it means to travel. A two week vacation to Hawaii does require you to travel there, but it’s only a temporary escape and an expensive travel experience that ends as soon as you walk back in your front door after a long flight home, sit the luggage down and heave a big sigh, because it’s back to the routine, the same ol’, same ol’ life, day in and day out.

Without a doubt, you had a wondrous time in Hawaii and have pictures to keep the memories alive. But within a short time of being back in the rat race, it feels like you never really were away and you begin to long for the next vacation … which won’t happen for another year.

Meanwhile, you work your ass off to either pay for the vacation you just had or to save up for next year’s trip. Maybe next year, you’ll just go to Florida because Hawaii was quite the expensive vacation. In 2015, a one-week  “budget” trip to Hawaii cost approximately $5000 for a couple compared to $1120 for a “budget” vacation in Florida for one week. So Florida it is … but it is still a year away.

Oh, there are so many places you want to see and experience, but the limitation of one or two weeks of vacation time a year greatly reduces how many you’ll check off your list.

Sigh. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just go? Go with no restriction on time? Go anywhere, go further, stay longer?

Wouldn’t it be absolutely fantastic if every day was a vacation?

“But wait, that would cost a fortune!” you think.

I have just one question for you …

How bad do you want this dream?

When I share that I can show you how to live and travel for $20 a day, you’ll lean in and eagerly be all ears. I know you’re already doing the math in your head and second-guessing the dollar amount. You know the price of hotels and flights and meals and souvenirs and those exorbitant tourist town taxes.

“Impossible!” you say.

Let me introduce you to the Vanabode lifestyle … the way you CAN live and travel to all those places you have on your list for $20 a day while living in a van.

Now, before you read any further, let me be clear about one thing. This lifestyle may not be for you if you cannot simplify your life, if having a dozen pair of shoes, a closet full of clothes, a kitchen full of appliances and a house full of stuff is more important to you than a travel lifestyle.

Yep. Lost a few readers with that disclaimer.

The American Dream is a lie.

We  have been programmed to believe and put all our time, money and energy into the American Dream … get a degree, get a job, buy a house and spend the rest of your life waiting for retirement so you can relax and do what you have only been allowed to do for two weeks every year.

Living in a van is a perfect solution if you desire to own your life instead of your life owning you.

In this video from Business Insider, James Altucher, author of “Choose Yourself” speaks bluntly and clearly about the lie of the American Dream.

Don’t subscribe to some mass hypnosis dream that was designed to get us to spend as much money and time on other people’s dreams as possible.  – James Altucher

The only dream that matters, the only dream worth building is YOUR dream.

You don’t own stuff, the stuff OWNS you.

It’s a crazy madness that takes control over your life.  Society has programmed us to accumulate and fill our houses, closets, shelves and garages with more and more and more stuff – to the extent that garages no longer have space for cars and the storage shed business is growing rapidly.

We buy stuff at an alarming rate and then spend more time and money maintaining, repairing and replacing it, often getting a second job to help continue this endless, maddening cycle of materialism.

In the end, after you are gone from this physical body, all that “stuff” will be sorted, distributed and fought over by greedy relatives … because, well, because everyone has become addicted to accumulating more and more.

So, now imagine living a simple life where you have everything you need, but it all fits in a van. That is the Vanabode lifestyle. A simpler life that allows you to expand your life instead of expanding stuff.

Why the Vanabode Lifestyle is Less Stressful than the RV Lifestyle

Some will argue to the moon and back that the best way to live and travel the country is in a RV, and while it’s definitely a step closer to a life of freedom, there are some drawbacks that we have experienced on the Naked Hippies never-ending roadtrip.

The biggest drawback is that you have limited freedom and mobility. Even a small pickup camper like our Big Foot can’t always easily be pulled into parking spaces or lots. And, the bigger the RV, the more difficult this becomes.

While most Wal-Marts remain available for overnight parking, more and more cities are passing ordinances against RVs. We used to love going to Ocean Beach, California because we could park on any street and usually found a space a block from the beach. We would spend the day enjoying the town, the beach, the sunset and then crawl into our camper to sleep. That freedom ended when San Diego County decided to prohibit RVs this parking privilege by issuing fines – even to homeowners who had been parking their RVs in front of their house. It’s becoming more and more restrictive to gallivant around the country in an RV.

Of course, there are endless RV parks where you can stay for one night or for the season, or for years; but in our experience, these feel like a crowded suburbia with numbered lots drawn out in endless rows, the RVs sitting shoulder to shoulder like little soldiers. RV parks are no different than hotels … if you want more space around you, if you want a room “with a view,” you pay extra – lots extra.

And then, after you’ve parked your RV in one of these parks, in a constricting tiny space where there may or may not be a patch of nature to soften the harshness of all the asphalt, you will need some mode of transportation to get you to anywhere else in the surrounding area – the grocery store, the trails for hiking, the museums and restaurants. You leave your home in RV suburbia just as you do when living in a house or apartment in any town. The only difference is that you now have a home on wheels, but wait a minute, the wheels aren’t moving, so there’s really no difference.

When you are living in a van, you never leave your home, it is always with you, like a turtle. Everywhere you go, you always have everything you need. Your bed is always available for an afternoon nap or movie on a rainy day when plans for the beach or a hike are halted.

Another drawback to consider is the expense of owning and maintaining an RV. As with anything, the more bells and whistles, the more there is to maintain and repair. RVs are one step closer to freedom, but they still can cost you tons. Buy a new one, and it’s like you’ve taken on a new mortgage. But a used one, and you will be investing in repairs and replacements, just like buying a “fixer-upper” house. Plus, there will be additional taxes, licenses and insurance.

It really comes down to what you want and why it matters to you. If luxury and gadgets and size matter, this article has already bored you.

But, if simplicity and freedom to go anywhere without stress or worry is your dream, you’ll keep reading and you will get the Vanabode book.

How the Vanabode book will help you, even if you don’t want to live in a van.

When we first began planning to live fulltime in an RV, we found Jason Odom’s book about the Vanabode lifestyle. We learned tips that became part of our lifestyle as we took off in our pickup camper. And while the book focuses on living in a van, it has been our “Bible” for learning how to live simply and cheaply as we travel full time.

This is no ordinary “how to” book. Jason has covered every aspect of living in a van and not just from ideas about how to do this, but from his own experiences of actually living this way. He addresses getting out of debt; he suggests ways to create income on the road; he illustrates and explores the simplicity in eating and clothing. He shares the essential tools and products he uses for creating comfort and ease of Vanaboding.

But most of all, he proves that the life of travel is affordable and so very rewarding, especially as you take the back roads, the scenic highways and have the freedom to stop anywhere and embrace the beauty and splendor of what nature is expressing in glorious display.

Bruce and I travel to see, explore, discover and be immersed in the wonders and essence of nature. We’ve been on the road since 2013 in our pickup camper and it’s been the most amazing, fulfilling and enriching experience. And now, we’re in the midst of planning for our Vanabode. We’re ready to simplify even more and have the ultimate freedom to go anywhere, park anywhere as we continue to live on our never-ending roadtrip.

Jason not only provided our Vanabode “Bible,” when we bought the book, he shared access to an extensive location specific list for each state. Each state listed contains pictures and information that cover things like what to do when you get there, what time of year to visit to avoid the crowds, temperature ranges from night to day, expected budget, and safety concerns if any.

Whether it’s a big city you are going to visit or an adventure into the woods, it’s like having your own travel concierge.

He recently published a new book about his trip along the East Coast – written to prove the naysayers who said you can’t possibly live and travel on $20 a day in the East.  He documented the trip – 18 weeks, 7500 miles on $20 a day along the breathtaking and beautiful East Coast. The book was a delightful read and has inspired and lured us to make that trip the first one we take in our Vanabode! We’ll use this book as a resource on our East Coast trip for Jason shares many insider tips that he and his wife discovered about every stop they made along the way.

But, it’s the original book that gave us the push, the ideas, the solutions to help us live and travel and work easily and cheaply on the open road, even though we were living in a pickup camper, not living in a van.

In my new book “RV LIVING: THE NAKED HIPPIES WAY: Live YOUR Dreams, Don’t Wait for Someday,” many of the ideas I share about how we live and travel cheaply were inspired by what we learned from the Vanabode book. Jason’s book is a catalyst that gets you  thinking outside the box so that you can begin now to break free and travel … to exciting big cities, to quaint little beach towns, to remote areas where it’s just you and Nature.

Traveling is one of the most rewarding experiences in life … right up there with giving birth! It calls, it nudges, it pulls you to come, to do, to break free … like a song playing over and over in your heart with a melody that expresses joy and freedom and delight. Do you hear the song? It is calling you, urging you, pulling you to come … see … explore … experience the wondrous life of freedom.

Living in a van allows you the freedom to go anywhere and everywhere.

The question that remains is WILL YOU?  Only you can answer that question, only you can sing your song of freedom. Don’t wait.

Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

Get the book … see what you can do starting now to travel further, easier and cheaper.

We’ll be living in a van soon … see you on the road!

Illinois Tollways has the most frustrating, outdated, and backwards way to collect tolls. It's a scam, it's extortion.

Illinois Tollway Runs a Lucrative Tourist Scam

Illinois Tollway has greatly diminished any further Naked Hippies roadtrips to the state.

As you know, we are full-time RVers who spend our lives traveling across the U.S., taking in the incredible scenes of Nature offered in this beautiful country … to the tune of 18 states and 21,000 miles in 2014 alone.

Most states have understood that with the advent of debit cards, travelers don’t always carry cash and thus, have adapted and updated their systems to make use of technology to make things simpler for tourists.

All you have to do is go to their website, enter your license plate number, see the tolls owed, enter your card number … paid … done … simple.

Welcome to the state of Illinois … that touts”mile after magnificent mile” in its tourism promotions.

Be aware … driving mile after mile in Illinois could end up costing you hundreds, thousands … could end up bankrupting you … and even get your license and registration revoked!

Illinois Tollway fines could bankrupt you!

[Source}

Recently, while traveling through Illinois, as we followed ‘Siri” our GPS, we saw the signs that informed us we could easily pay the tolls online within 3 days.

No worries, we’ve done this many times before. We were scheduled to leave the state before the first tolls were due, so we naturally thought that when we were finished with our roadtrip, we would log-on to the website and pay all of the tolls in one simple transaction.

WRONG!

Upon arriving at the Illinois Tollway website, we were greeted with this message:

IMPORTANT: There is no capability to search for your unpaid tolls by entering your license plate. You are responsible for reporting each toll you did not pay. You must continue by following the instructions to enter the unpaid toll information in order to avoid violations.

After three days of wandering around the state of Illinois, we were supposed to tell THEM every time we entered and exited a toll road.

Perhaps in days gone by, when you had to map out your trips, that might have been possible … difficult, but possible.  But today, when navigating by listening to a computerized voice telling you when and where to turn, it becomes completely impossible.

After multiple attempts at using the Illinois Tollway website, calling the customer service line and reaching only recordings that told us the same thing…“we are not going to tell you what you owe,”  we simply gave up, seeing no other alternative.

We FINALLY received a bill in the mail and were informed that our exact tolls had been $7.97,  but because of fines – we now owed $87.97.

Funny how they couldn’t tell us how much we owed at the time, but they sure as heck can once the fines have been added.

It’s is a common occurrence.

Total Amount Due or this or that other threat: $62.60!
$62.60 for $2.80 tolls!

CAN YOU SAY HIGHWAY ROBBERY?

I wasn’t out to rip off the Illinois Tollway but it appears this “road rage” – this outrageous and exorbitant fine – is meant to take advantage of drivers unfamiliar with Illinois road ways. It appears the Illinois Tollway have worded the bill to completely cover themselves and offers no understanding or compromise.” [Source]

Read Kim’s unbelievable story here of being charged $2,300 for toll violations which prompted a reader to share her nightmare below:

$12,000 Fine – Pay it our lose your license!

Illinois Tollway fine of $12,000 is highway robbery.
There was also a phone number included with our letter to actually contact a live person at Illinois Tollways. This live person informed us that even if we had been able to contact a live person at the time, it wouldn’t have mattered – since they are not allowed to tell you how much is owed.

She also informed us that we now owed $287.97 plus the threat of having our drivers license and registration for our vehicle revoked if not paid.

This “we’re not going to tell you what you owe, but if you don’t pay the amount (that we’re not going to tell you) you will be royally screwed”  sounds very much premeditated and with malicious forethought.

The State of Illinois is willfully and intentionally scamming tourists.

We’re fighting this with every means we can. If you are outraged at yet another story of the government digging its claws into every thing that you do … then share this blog post.

The best defense against usurpatory government is an assertive citizenry. – William F. Buckley, Jr.

If tourists just avoid Illinois in order to keep from getting ripped off like this, how much money will the state lose from sales tax and hospitality taxes from the restaurants, motels, and other tourist venues?

Because the only way the world can ever truly be a better place is if the people who make it a worse place no longer have the means to do so. – Simon Black

Stay tuned. This isn’t over for us. We’ll keep you updated on what happens next.  But this you can be sure of … we won’t be traveling through Illinois.

The Naked Hippies’ Pickup Gets Naked … one step closer to our Vanabode!

Ready to see the Naked Hippies’ pickup get naked?

It’s about time, don’t you think?  Ha ha!

We have lived and traveled in this Big Foot camper since 2010 … and have never taken the camper off our Dodge Ram pickup.

pickup-gets-naked-naked-hippies-roadtrip
We haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on our list!

Now, as we prepare for the switch from a pick up camper to the Vanabode stealth camping lifestyle, our truck had to get naked.

We had to remove the camper so we can sell the truck separately from the camper and still have a place to live while we modify and set up the Vanabode.

I have to admit, I was pretty nervous about doing this.  After all, it’s our HOME and the camper has been resting on the truck for over five years.  All kinds of what ifs started spewing from my mouth.

  • What if the support legs won’t hold the camper up?
  • What if we can’t get the camper back on the truck if we need to?
  • What if the camper tips forward because we sleep and get a bit rowdy on the front end where there is no support?

If this had been a reality show, you would have watched me stand close by with furrowed brow and an anxious look.

You would have seen Bruce read the instructions for removing the camper.  (By the way, we were extremely grateful to find these instructions in the truck’s glove compartment!  Can you say lifesaver?)

And, you would have seen Ron, our dear friend, pull out the necessary tools and gadgets from his magic storehouse and just tackle the job without worrying about the what ifs still pouring from my mouth!

Uh oh!  The hydraulics aren’t working.

“I knew it!” Trisha mutters under her breath.

A quick call to  another dear friend in Eureka Springs, who is the official Naked Hippies mechanic provided the solution … get some oil and a plastic squeeze bottle to add the oil to the hydraulic canisters.

That’s all it took!

Bruce and Ron cranked the hydraulics to lift the camper off the truck.

And now … Our Naked Hippies’ pickup gets naked!

I swear it kinda shimmied and shook when we “undressed” it!

We piled into the cab of the truck and took off for Home Depot to get concrete blocks to sit the camper on.

At first, Bruce was a little disoriented driving the truck without the camper on its back and without all that weight!   He had to get used to have a 360 view of all traffic again!

It was totally weird to not have Big Foot with us.

Now we’re wondering what kind of mileage the truck will get. It’s been pretty awesome in spite of the weight.  Bruce was getting nearly 20 mpg WITH Big Foot!

Lowering the camper onto the concrete blocks was a breeze. A successful job!

(AND, there IS support up front under the bed, too!)  WHEW!

Who wants to buy a Naked VINTAGE 1989 Dodge Ram pickup 350 with a Cummins Turbo Diesel?   This truck will run forever, or so we’ve been told by many mechanics.

Stay tuned … more adventures ahead!

how-to-be-an-entrepreneur-late-in-life-naked-hippies-roadtrip

How to Be An Entrepreneur Late in Life … and Why You Should

Why and how to be an entrepreneur late in life is a message that is much needed in today’s society.

People are living longer, health conscious adults are thriving at age 50, 60 , 70 and 80 when just a few decades ago, 50 was considered old age.

It’s not time to call it quits, to find your rocker and take up knitting. You have experience and knowledge that surpasses the naivete of 30 somethings.

Gary Vaynerchuk delivers an impactful appeal to senior citizens to learn how to be an entrepreneur late in life and even more importantly … WHY you should.

“This video is made for one reason … I wanted  it to be the calling card,  the seed of the explosion for  the 40 to 80 year old entrepreneur in our society.” – Gary Vaynerchuk

In addition to you having four score or three score years of experience to bring to the marketplace, there is also the issue of putting food on the table during your retirement years.

The statistics are alarming:

Number of Baby Boomers Filing Bankruptcy increased 178%!

never-too-old

1 our of 6 Baby Boomers are living below the poverty level!

It’s not unrealistic to forecast the complete insolvency of the Social Security and Medicare system as  the onslaught of baby boomers reaching the benefit age slams the system.   In fact, over the next 20 years, more than 10,000 Baby Boomers will be retiring every single day.

If the U.S. government is already $17 trillion in debt, how and where would there be funds to keep Social Security and Medicare afloat?

It’s not going to be pretty.

I’ve covered the WHY you want to be an entrepreneur late in life.

Now let’s cover the HOW to be an entrepreneur late in life.

There is a multitude of “make money from home” opportunities that show up when you search Google for ideas.

You have endless possibilities at your fingertips.

The best way to get started is to find someone in the industry who is doing what you would love to do … and follow them.   Follow their methods, get on their newsletter list, and study what they do and how they do it.

Don’t jump in bed with the first marketer that appeals to you.  Do your due diligence and find  one who has integrity, who is not the flash and dazzle you with pictures of money type, who exudes sincere care and concern for your success over his/her own.

Take your time, listen and learn.

You may think you can’t learn how to maneuver around on social media platforms, but that’s just a mindset matter.  You are a lifelong student and all that you desire to learn and master is available now more than ever through technology.

You CAN learn how to be an entrepreneur at 50 or 70 or 90!

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”

Here’s to making the rest of your amazing life even more amazing!

how to become an entrepreneur
