How to Find Copyright Free Images So You Don’t Get Sued

How to find copyright free images? This matters greatly to any blogger and anyone who posts images on Social Media sites.

We’ve all done it – hurriedly and excitedly grabbed an image from Google to use in a blog post, a Facebook meme or a sales page. It’s so easy and there’s so many great images available on the internet.

Plus, it seems everyone else is doing it, so what’s the big deal? Why should you be so very careful with the images you use? Here’s why! You could be sued for using a copyrighted image.

That quick download of an image could end up costing you big money in a lawsuit.

Roni Loren experienced this firsthand when she was sued for an image she used in a blog post.

Recently an avid internet marketer was sued for the image he grabbed from the internet.

Roni Loren explains It DOESN’T MATTER…

  • if you link back to the source and list the photographer’s name
  • if the picture is not full-sized (only thumbnail size is okay)
  • if you did it innocently
  • if your site is non-commercial and you made no money from the use of the photo
  • if you didn’t claim the photo was yours
  • if you’ve added commentary in addition to having the pic in the post
  • if the picture is embedded and not saved on your server
  • if you have a disclaimer on your site.
  • if you immediately take down a pic if someone sends you a DMCA notice (you do have to take it down, but it doesn’t absolve you.)

1. Use your own pics.

With the ease and technology that smart phones have provided, you have the means to stay safe by using your own pics.

2. Subscribe to an image service.

The costs for subscriptions like Shutterfly varies but it can get pretty pricey if you use a lot of images.

3. Use copyright free images.

Ever since I read the first horror story of a blogger being sued for using a copyrighted image, I always refrain from just grabbing any image from Google. The great news is that I’ve always been able to find exactly what I needed when my own pics just didn’t suit the intent of my blog post or Facebook meme. This is where I find copyright free images. *** My first go-to source for images is Pixabay.com. Pixabay is a vibrant community of creatives, sharing copyright free images and videos. All contents are released under Creative Commons CC0, which makes them safe to use without asking for permission or giving credit to the artist – even for commercial purposes. Set up a free account and begin using this amazing service. *** My second source is actually Google images! But it’s more involved. I do an advanced search to find images that are copy-right free and available to use and modify, even commercially. Here’s how to find copyright free images  on Google

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.0.80″][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.80″ text_font_size=”16px”] 1. Do a Google search for your subject, then click on “Images.” In this example, I searched for mountains images. Look at that – 27 million images! I hit the mother lode! But before I use any of these images, I narrow down the search to find copyright free images. Next … [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_image src=”https://nakedhippiesroadtrip.us/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/image_search.png” _builder_version=”3.0.80″ use_border_color=”on” border_color=”#0c71c3″ url_new_window=”on” alt=”How to find copyright free images is possible, even with Google images” url=”http://trishahippie.com”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.0.80″][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.80″ text_font_size=”16px”] 2. These two resources have provided endless photos quickly and easily, saving me loads of time. I truly cringe when I think of how many people do not realize the jeopardy they may be facing if they don’t use copyright free images. If you’ve been partaking of the plethora of Google images without a second thought of copyright, I hope my warning and suggestions help you protect yourself. How to stand out so others will find you on the internet ... you're competing with millions!

How to Stand Out Among Billions on the Internet

Stand out among billions on the internet or you’ll stand in the shadows of those who do …

If you don’t stand out, you’ll wring your hands, beat your head against the wall, cry out to the gods of cyberspace and probably start to think of throwing in the towel.

via GIPHY

HOLD ON!  Before you scream “It’s no use,” read on for some tips on standing out on the internet.

Just so you know, as of just a few minutes ago, there were nearly 3 million blog posts written today, over 154 billion emails sent, and over 648 million tweets.  And the day ain’t over yet!
[source: http://www.internetlivestats.com/]

Click the pic to see the “real time” numbers

As the number of internet users it is more evident than ever that you stand out as a blogger, as a marketer among the billions on the internet – but how?

HOW TO STAND OUT ON THE INTERNET LIKE THE NAKED HIPPIES’ PICKUP CAMPER PARKED IN THE MIDST OF CLASS A RVS

1.  BE YOU – the #1 thing you can do

You're among MILLIONS of bloggers, Facebook users, Tweeters on the internet ... how do you stand out?
It’s really, really, really okay to be YOU!

There is no one else like you. No one else has your style, your voice, your personality and yes, even your quirks.

But, that’s exactly what attracts followers.  You just have to be as real as it gets. Be the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s all allowed and adored because everyone is sick and tired of the hype and false pretensions on the internet (and everywhere else in life, too.)

People have a keen sense of smell … they can smell the stink of fake or the fragrance of genuineness.

Nobody can DO YOU like you do you!  There’s a ton of people copying other styles, trying to “fit in,” attempting to be something they truly aren’t.  You just do you and leave the mask off.

2. BE CONSISTENT

It doesn’t matter whether you blog every day, three times a week or even once a week. What matters is that you are CONSISTENT.

Consistently showing up is one key to standing out on the internet among the billions.
Every day matters. Be there!

On social media platforms, it’s a daily requirement – at least once a day, but even better to have a presence several times a day for this reason … your social media posts have a short shelf life:

TWITTER: The median lifespan of a tweet is 18 minutes.

FACEBOOK: 75% of the engagement you get on your posts happens within the first 5 hours. After that, engagement pretty much dies off. [more statistics here]

INSTAGRAM: Your photo on Instagram may only get seen once, so make it a good one. [source]

PINTEREST:  Your Pinterest pins are on Pinterest forever.  However they are only going to show up in your followers’ streams when you initially pin them. [source]

3. USE IMAGES

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and it’s been proven to be the most engaging, the most valuable element of your social media marketing and on your blog.

Using great images increases your chance of standing out on the internet.
Find some fun pics like this on Pixabay!

Research from Skyword found that if your content includes compelling images, you can average 94 percent more views than your boring counterparts. [source]

Word of warning though:  use only your own personal pictures or images that you have permission to use without worry of copyright infringement.  The last thing you need is a lawsuit for grabbing an image from Google or Pinterest or someone’s blog, thinking because it’s on the web, it’s okay to use it.  WRONG.

A great source for copyright-free images is Pixabay.  The search function gives you tons of images to choose from, and they are available in different sizes to suit your needs.

4. TITLES  AND FIRST LINES

A great title and the first few words of your social media post have to GRAB the attention of the reader. If it doesn’t, they will click off or scroll away from what you are sharing.

On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.  -David Ogilvy

Too often, more attention is given to the content created than the title or headline.

Jeff Goins writes, “You should begin and end every article with the question: ‘Would this make me want to read on?'”

In this article, he offers a simple formula for your titles:

Number or Trigger word + Adjective + Keyword + Promise

You’ve got about 3 seconds to get someone’s attention with your title or your social media post.  Pay attention to the subject lines of the emails you receive from other marketers … notice how some have a title that you can’t ignore … you just have to read more. That’s exactly what you want your titles to do.

5.  BE A RESOURCE

Be a resource for what people need.

Most people are always looking to increase pleasure or decrease pain in their lives.  You can be the “go-to” person that they will learn to rely on for either (as you incorporate all of these tips.)

Being a resource doesn’t mean you have to have a PhD in a subject.

You have skills and life experiences to share with the world.
Life has given you a boatload of skills and experiences to share.

You just have to share what you know … the knowledge you’ve gained and the experiences you have had in life.

Decrease the pain:   What are your skills?  There is someone who is searching how to do exactly what you already know.  You probably have more skills than you realize.  Make a list of everything you know how to do, no matter how insignificant it might seem, from your expertise as a realtor to your amazing skills as a mom. You’d be surprised at what people type in the search bars!

Increase the pleasure:  Are you a motivator?  Do you inspire and encourage people?  Are you funny and entertaining?  Do you write poetry, compose music, create beautiful works of art?  Share your strengths to be a source of light in other lives.

These five tips to help you stand out on the internet are intended to get your creative juices flowing and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and show the world what you’ve got!

via GIPHY

It does take work, effort and commitment to implement these tips, but, remember, there are millions, sometimes billions of eyeballs.

What other tips have you found to help you stand out on the internet?  Share!  I’d love to hear!

9 Blog Post Ideas for Creating Massive Content

Here are 9 blog post ideas for creating massive content because there are days when you feel the well has run dry.

Does it ever happen to you?  Seriously, do you ever sit there staring at a blank screen saying I can’t think of a single thing to blog about?

So, what do you do when you’ve got that deer in the headlights look and you can’t think of a thing … when you’re just wrung out dry?  What do you do?

Put on your imaginary thinking cap because I’ve got some great ideas to spur you to writing.

Note:  Scroll down for the video version of this blog post.

9 Blog Posts Ideas for Massive Content

1. HOW TO

Create tons of content with these 9 ideas to jumpstart your imagination and inspiration for blog posts.
Be the solution to someone’s question.

People are always searching for instructions on how to do something.  Think of the last time you searched YouTube because you had something that needed to be fixed or you had to figure out how to do something.  You most likely found a video to walk you through the solution, step by step.

I did that when we needed to put a new keyboard on my particular model of laptop.  I searched YouTube, found the steps and felt pretty dang proud I could manage to do this without taking the laptop to a computer shop.

Maybe you’ve just recently learned how to do something new.  Share that.  Maybe you’ve got a whole treasure chest of things you know how to do.  That means you have a ton of blog posts waiting for this information, as well as people searching for the solution and tips you share.

2. REVIEW

You can write a review on anything … on a book you just read, a movie you saw, a restaurant you went to, an new product you tried, a theme park you enjoyed, a recipe you tried … anything.  Just share your experience.

This is my experience with when I …

this is what I think of this …

Reviews are fun and easy to do because of the multitude of experiences you have to draw from, the places you go, the products you use, etc.  You get to be as excited or disappointed as you want, you get to express exactly how much you liked or disliked the product/service/experience.

3. A NUMBERED LIST

This type of blog post is fun and will really get your imagination running. Share a list, a numbered list on your blog such as:

5 ways to increase your energy
10 ways to clear out clutter
20 top motivating quotes
10 reasons to live the rv full time life.

Some of these types of lists will require research. Others will be developed from your own personal experiences.

Remember David Letterman’s Top Ten Lists?  No reason you can’t create your own humorous lists, too.

People like numbered lists … they’re valuable, quick and easy to read and even entertaining.

4. RESOURCES

Help people find the best of the best, according to your personal opinion.

Such as the 5 best Ted Talks that you have watched, the 6 best historic places to visit while you are in Arizona, or the 10 best personal development books you have ever read.

Put them all together in a blog post with pictures (if available) and links to the videos, the books, the places so your readers can access more information.

HELP! I don't know what to blog about! Here's help for creating massive amounts of content.
What to write about, what to write about. Keep reading!

5. VIDEOS

Another quick and easy way to create a blog post is to share videos on your blog.  It’s very easy to get the embed code from YouTube and add it to your blog post.  All you have to do is write a little snippet of content above and below it and let the video do all the work for you.

Or, create your own videos of course.  One of the best ways to establish credibility and build relationships with people is with videos of yourself.  People love to see the face behind the message. It helps them get to know you better.

6. INTERVIEWS

There are amazing people in this world and I’m not just referring to the top gurus and the most successful leaders in the world. I’m talking about people from every walk of life. Interview them. Share their inspirational story.

Find someone that you admire or someone that you work with.  Maybe they just achieved something really spectacular.  Ask to interview them.  You can record the interview as a Google Hangout and then embed the video on your blog or you could even record a phone interview (use http://freeconferencing.com)  and upload the Mp3 to your blog.

Interviews are a great way to add content to your blog.

7. GUEST POSTS

This one will definitely lesson your work load since you’ll be using someone else’s writing to fill your blog post.   Find people that you resonate with and ask them to do a guest post on your blog.  They will love the exposure and most everyone will cross-promote their guest post on your blog on their social media platforms.

It’s easy content that you don’t have to write.  All you have to do is say something to introduce them and say something in closing.

8. CHECKLISTS

Another fun type of blog posts are checklists. You make it easy for people to get some helpful, useful information in a quick way.

Think of what experiences would be easily carried out with a checklist, such as:

#What to ask your mechanic when you take your vehicle to the garage

#What to take camping

#What you need to apply for a passport

#What to remember when packing when packing for college

The possibilities are endless for checklists.

9. SERIES

This is one type of blog post that I love the most because it makes me accountable. If I say I’m going to do 31 days of marketing tips, you better believe I’m going to show up and do 31 days because I said I was going to do it.

Or a series like 7 days of personal transformation tips or 6 days to better health or whatever you can come up with.

Think of a type of series you would enjoy doing and begin.

The last one didn’t make my own personal go-to list for blog topics, but it might be of interest to you.

CONTROVERSIAL

Controversial subjects are great blog posts, but only if you really don't care what people say to you.
So you’re upset with what I wrote?

I shy away from this type of blog post because I’m not a very controversial person; however,  it really does attract readers and followers if you have a penchant for it.

Bringing up a controversial topic gets people riled up. If you’re strong enough to handle criticism along with the supportive comments, go for it.

One additional tip that I don’t want you to miss as you begin creating all these new blog posts:

Whenever you feature a book, a product, a person, another blog post … anything that you mention in your blog that can be linked to their website …DO IT.  It creates backlinks to your blog, which helps with SEO (search engine optimization.)

As promised, here’s the Periscope video for those who would rather listen than read:

I hope these 9 blog post ideas for creating massive content have helped you start to think of the endless possibilities.  Most of all I hope your fingers are itching to get started typing!

What other ideas do you have that help when you need blog post ideas?

Quick and easy tips to SEO your wordpress blog images.

How to SEO Your WordPress Blog Images

Make sure you do this: SEO your wordpress blog images.

SEO (search engine optimization) is important for all parts of your blog, including your images.

If you want your blog post to be ranked higher in search engine results, naming your images as you upload them will help you SEO your wordpress blog images … and it’s easy to do.

An added benefit to using the steps below is that your image will have a description readily available for Pinterest.

Assuming you have done the keyword research for your blog title, follow these steps when adding and naming images in your blog posts:

TITLE

Most images when uploaded have an unrecognizable title that Google can’t make sense of, such as Image01.jpeg.

The title of your image should be the title of your blog post, which includes the keywords you have chosen.

ALT TEXT

The alt text simply refers to a text alternative for images when a web browser can’t properly render them.  Have you ever received an email that included an image you couldn’t view?

If you take time to write a descriptive, keyword-rich alt text, your readers will have added description of the content you are sharing.

Adding the alt text to your blog images automatically adds those words to the description when pinning the image. Additionally, if you are using Pinterest to market your blog, the alt text will be added in the description on Pinterest automatically, so you don’t have to take that necessary step when pinning.

FINDING THE RIGHT IMAGE

If you have your own pictures to you, that is absolutely the best way to protect yourself from copyright infringement.

But, sometimes, you need an image to convey the right message and none of your own images are appropriate.

My favorite source for free images that are Creative Common licensed come from Pixabay.  You can search for images by typing in a subject or a color, emotion, gender, event, etc.

The images from Pixabay are high quality and available in various sizes to download.

Set up your free account and start searching!  You’ll be amazed and relieved to find such a vast amount to choose from.

Be careful of grabbing images from Google.  There have been countless reports of lawsuits filed against bloggers who innocently thought it was okay to use any image from Google.

The general rule of thumb is this: if the image isn’t Creative Common licensed or you didn’t buy or create it, don’t post it.

ADD A HYPERLINK TO YOUR IMAGE

Be sure to add a link to your images, usually the link in your CTA (Call To Action.)  People get click happy on blogs and if someone happens to click on one of your images, they will be taken right to your capture page, or social media page – whichever link you choose.

When you upload an image, the default setting is for the media link within your wordpress blog.  Use the drop down to add a custom url to the image.

ANOTHER GREAT PINTEREST TIP

Use an online image editing software to add your blog title to the featured image on your blog.  (as I did for this blog post)

Adding the alt text will put it in the description on Pinterest automatically.
This is my Naked Hippies Roadtrip Blog board on Pinterest. Note that every blog post has the title added to the image.

This is so that when the image is pinned to Pinterest, the blog title gives your fellow pinners quick, compelling information right there on the image when they are scrolling.  It will increase the likelihood that they will click to read more – and be taken to your blog!

I highly recommend PicMonkey for your online image editing. It does have a yearly fee, but the value delivered from the membership is priceless.

PicMonkey regularly sends out image editing tips with short videos to show you how to use the endless array of editing features. I’ve been able to revive images that seemed too dull to use with their editing features.

The bonus is their affiliate program. (seriously, whatever tool or resource you use, become an affiliate to make extra money by referring people to the product! It all adds up.)

Using images in all your marketing is a no-brainer. But their value as an asset for organic search results and SEO is often overlooked. Your images can also show up in image searches, which is why optimizing every image you use is an important step to take.

My image from a recent blog post now shows up when people search Google for images of Vanabode.

SEO your images - they WILL show up on Google image searches!
SEO is so important! This image from a recent blog post shows up on the first page of Google.

The bottom line is this … everything you can do to SEO your WordPress blog images matters if you want to be ranked in Google and get eyeballs on your amazing blog.

P.S.  Want a blog, but don’t know where to begin?
How about a done-for-you, all set up blog so you don’t spend weeks and weeks and weeks learning about how to set up a WordPress blog?   Message me, text me, call me!

What to blog about when you can’t think of anything

What to blog about?

Does this sound familiar?  You are staring at a blank screen, your hand poised over the keyboard and there is NOTHING trickling down from your mind to your fingertips.

It happens.  You hit a wall.  You feel uninspired.  You just can’t come up with anything you think is worth writing about.

If this happens to you, jump back in the saddle, grab the reins and hold on … this one blog post idea will have you up and running again.

via GIPHY

Let’s peel back the layers of your amazing life to find gold to write about with these five questions:

question-mark-tie-dye-First question:  did you read anything recently that made you go, “hmmmmm,” or made your heart beat a little faster, or smacked you in the head like the V-8 commercial?

Write about it!

Hint: read every day from books that challenge you, inspire you and provide motivation and inspiration to change your life.

question-mark-tie-dye-Second question:  did you listen to  training hangout or event and took tons of notes because what they were teaching was exactly what you needed to implement in your life or your business?

Write about it!

Hint:  you’ll always be learning something new (or you SHOULD be!) Take time to share what you are learning.  Always remember, you learn from those who are farther ahead on the journey but there are many who are far behind where you are right now.  Share with them what you are learning to help them move forward.

question-mark-tie-dye-Third question:  have you changed a habit recently?  Decided to do something differently or to stop doing something? Could be anything.  What’s the experience you are having … is it difficult, are you slipping back into the old habit, or are you sticking with this?

Write about it!

Hint:  People love reality. I mean look at all the ridiculous reality TV shows.  Be real about your goals, your struggles, your successes.

question-mark-tie-dye-Fourth question:  what is your dream?  You know, the one that has been a lifetime resident in your heart and keeps kicking against the door to get out and become REAL?

Write about it!

She’s just as fun and gracious in person as she is online! Loved meeting Kim Garst!

Every social media platform was included in the two full days of training … Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Periscope.

It would be an arduous task to elaborate on ALL the training and knowledge shared at the event in one blog post, so I’m sharing these top takeaways from the Boom Social 2015 event.
